MacMillan root elevators come in three figures: Fig. 11, Fig. 12 and Fig. 13. This page looks mainly at control, because an elevator is only as safe as the hand behind it. Each figure sells alone, so build the set that suits you.

A Steady Hand on the Handle

Hold the instrument close to the working end for fine control. Then let your wrist, not your shoulder, drive each small turn. Short moves give you time to feel the root give. By contrast, a big push can slip and bruise soft tissue.

Where to Place the Finger Rest

Rest a finger on firm tissue near the site. This rest acts as a stop if the tip slips. Also, the rest lets you guide force toward the apex. Leverage off the adjacent tooth is off limits unless you plan to remove it as well.

Gentle Force, Better Bone

Work by wedging and rotation in the PDL space rather than hard leverage. As a result, the buccal plate stays intact for a later implant. Patience here often saves a surgical step. Then, once the root moves, lift it out with forceps or a wider tool.
