Description
Lewkowitz Placenta and Ovum Forceps
Lewkowitz placenta forceps have ring jaws for grasping retained placental tissue. They also remove retained products of conception, and they measure about 25 cm.
Ring jaws
Ring-shaped jaws hold soft, friable tissue across a broad contact area. So they hold fragments over a wide area instead of at one point. Also, the open ring lets fluid pass through.
Straight or curved
The straight version follows a direct line to the cervix. However, the curved version follows the angle of the uterus more easily. Then the surgeon can reach fragments that sit high, near the fundus.
Where it fits
Teams use it after delivery, after miscarriage and during evacuation procedures. In addition, it pairs with a speculum, tenaculum and curette. As a result, the whole evacuation setup sits on one tray.
Size
At about 25 cm, Lewkowitz placenta forceps suit most obstetric and gynecologic trays. Meanwhile, longer patterns such as the Saenger reach farther. So pick by the reach you need.
Reprocessing Lewkowitz placenta forceps
Rinse the rings right away so tissue does not set inside them. Next, open the instrument and scrub the joint area and ring edges. Then dry thoroughly and inspect the jaws for alignment before packing the set.
