Description
Levasseur-Merrill Retractor
The Levasseur-Merrill retractor exposes the mandibular ramus in jaw surgery. Its 27 mm blade holds soft tissue away from the bone, and a fiber optic option lights the deep field.
With or without light
Our lit model runs fiber optic light down to the blade tip. As a result, the far side of the ramus is easy to see. Meanwhile, the plain version suits teams that use a headlight.
Size of the Levasseur-Merrill retractor
It measures 25 cm overall with a 27 mm blade. That length reaches the back of the mouth comfortably. In addition, the handle keeps the assistant’s hand outside the lips.
Where it is used
Jaw surgeons reach for it during sagittal split and other ramus cuts. In particular, it guards the inner side of the ramus. It also helps in fracture repair.
Why light matters here
The ramus sits deep and in shadow. Therefore, a light at the blade tip improves the view a great deal. Consequently, the surgeon can see the cut lines clearly.
Handling
Seat the blade against bone, under the soft tissue. Next, pull steadily toward the assistant. Also, check the lip corner often, since it can stretch.

Why we check each retractor
The product warranty protecting this retractor covers three years against manufacturing defects once it ships. Every retractor undergoes a close inspection in Atlanta prior to packing. For facts on surgical alloys, read ASTM F899. For a companion tool, try our Bauer ramus retractor. Other items feature in the general surgery range. For shipping questions, open our buyer FAQ.
