Knapp Hook, 4 Prong
Our Knapp hook 4 prong is a classic pronged retractor. Four prongs grip the tissue edge and hold it back with an even pull. Many surgeons use the Knapp pattern in lacrimal sac and lid work, where a steady, open field matters.
The Knapp name in eye surgery
Herman Knapp gave his name to several eye tools, from specula to forceps. This hook carries that name in a simple retracting form. So if you already use Knapp patterns, it will feel at home on your tray. It also sits well next to a speculum and fine forceps in a lacrimal set.
Knapp versus a two-prong hook
A two-prong hook gives a narrow hold that suits small openings. However, a wider wound needs more spread. That is where the four prongs help. They share the load, so the skin edge opens flat rather than in a peak.
Knapp handling points
- Engage the prongs just under the skin edge.
- Retract along the wound, not across it.
- Ask the assistant to keep tension even.
- Release slowly once the step is done.
Knapp cleaning in three steps
First, rinse the prongs under cool water while debris is still soft. Next, scrub between each prong with a small brush, or use an ultrasonic bath. Finally, rinse and dry. The Knapp ships non-sterile, so give it a full autoclave cycle before use. Then it can serve for many years.
Knapp hook warranty
Our Knapp four-prong retractor is covered for three years against manufacturing defects in prong form and steel. That steel meets ASTM F899. Visit our Atlanta eye instrument range for more, or look at the Fink four-prong hook. Our FAQ page answers most order questions.
