Knapp Eye Knife
The Knapp eye knife is a classic pattern often linked to discission, the opening of thin membranes inside the eye. Herman Knapp, a New York surgeon, gave his name to it. We offer it in one reusable steel form.
Linked to Discission
Discission means cutting or opening a thin membrane. In older cataract work, surgeons did this with a fine knife-needle. Today, other methods often take its place. Even so, the Knapp pattern still has a role for some surgeons and for teaching.
What Comes in the Box
- One Knapp pattern knife.
- No size or edge options listed.
- Reusable steel with a slim handle.
- Non-sterile packing.
A Fine Tip Needs a Light Hand
Hold it like a pen and brace your hand. Then move only the fingertips. Small, controlled moves keep the tip where you want it. Moreover, a sharp blade needs very little force.
The Tip Is the Weak Point
The tip is the most fragile part. So keep it guarded at all times off the field. Never let it touch other metal. Inspect it under the microscope before each use, since a bent tip changes how it enters.
Buying for a Residency Program
Programs often buy classic knives in small sets. Two or three Knapp knives let several residents practice in one session. Also, buy guards to match. Then each knife returns to storage protected.
Herman Knapp’s Influence
Knapp founded an eye hospital in New York and edited a major journal. As a result, his name travels widely in eye surgery. Several hooks and knives carry it. This knife is one of the best known.
