Description
Kantrowitz Dissecting and Ligature Forceps
Kantrowitz forceps are long right angle clamps used in thoracic and vascular work. They come in three lengths.
Three lengths
The 20 cm size suits moderate depth. Meanwhile, the 24 and 28 cm sizes reach into the chest and deep pelvis.
The right-angled jaw
The tip turns at a right angle, so it passes behind a vessel with little tissue disturbance.
Holding a tie
Serrated tips grip a ligature firmly. Therefore you can draw it around a vessel in one pass.
Deep thoracic work
In the chest, the long shaft keeps your hand clear of the rib spreader. So you keep a clear view of the hilum or great vessels. Also, a steady grip on the rings helps, because small movements travel to the tip. Then open the jaws in short strokes as you develop the plane.
Cleaning Kantrowitz forceps
Brush the angled tip where debris gathers. Then rinse, dry fully and store the long forceps flat so the shafts stay true.
