Jaeger Lid Instrument
The jaeger lid instrument is a classic tool for lid surgery, often known as a lid plate. Ours is 11cm long. It slides under the lid, gives you a firm surface to work on, and helps keep the eye beneath out of harm’s way.
How a Jaeger lid plate helps
When you cut or suture the lid, you need a firm backing. The Jaeger gives you that. Also, it sits between the lid and the globe, so it acts as a shield. As a result, you can work on the lid with more confidence.
Common Jaeger cases
You will find this tool in lid and oculoplastic sets. For example, it helps in lid lesion work, lid margin repair and other cases where you need to stabilise the lid. However, it is not a speculum, and it does not hold the lids apart on its own.
Using the 11cm Jaeger
- Moisten the lid area before you slide the plate in.
- Keep the plate flat against the inner lid.
- Hold the handle with a steady, light grip.
- Remove it slowly along the same path.
Caring for the Jaeger plate
Rinse it soon after use to clear blood and tissue. Then wash and brush both faces of the plate. Look for scratches or rough spots, since a smooth surface protects the eye. The plate leaves our shelf non-sterile, so put it through your steriliser before it ever meets a lid. Once processed, the Jaeger goes back into service case after case.
Jaeger order and warranty notes
The Jaeger tool comes with three years against manufacturing defects, so Jaeger plates with a build flaw get fixed or replaced. Its steel follows ASTM F899. Our ophthalmology catalogue lists more lid tools, such as the Conway lid instrument. See our FAQ for order help.
