Description
Jacobs Tenaculum Forceps
The Jacobs tenaculum is a vulsellum pattern for grasping the cervix. Its length runs about 20 cm, with straight and curved versions.
Vulsellum pattern
Vulsellum forceps take a strong hold on the cervix with little chance of slipping. So they help when steady traction matters. Plus, the pattern name often appears on hospital tray lists.
Straight or curved
The straight model suits a direct approach through the center of the speculum. By contrast, the curved model helps you keep the handle out of the view. Many departments keep one of each so clinicians can choose on the day.
Compact reach
About 20 cm places the Jacobs among our shorter tenacula. Therefore, it handles well in an office setting. Meanwhile, it still reaches the cervix through a typical speculum.
Pairing with other tools
First, place the Jacobs tenaculum to fix the cervix. Then pass a sound to check the depth and direction of the uterus. Next, dilators or a curette can follow along the same line.
Care of Jacobs tenaculum
After each case, flush the jaws and joint with water. Then clean them in an enzymatic soak and brush gently. Dry and inspect the instrument, including the jaw tips, before you return it to the set.
