Description
Holsher Nerve Root Retractor
The Holsher nerve root retractor moves the nerve root and dura gently to one side during spinal surgery. Surgeons rely on it most often during lumbar discectomy, when the disc lies right under the root.
Why the root needs a retractor
A herniated disc usually sits beneath or beside a nerve root. Therefore the surgeon must shift the root before reaching the disc. The retractor holds it there while rongeurs and curettes work nearby.
A 23 cm instrument with a 7 mm blade
We sell one size: 23 cm long with a 7 mm blade. That long shaft reaches down into a deep lumbar wound. Meanwhile, the 7 mm blade spreads pressure over the root rather than concentrating it at one point.
In the discectomy sequence
First, the surgeon opens the lamina and the ligament. Next, an assistant places the Holsher nerve root retractor against the root and draws it medially. Then the disc work begins under direct view. In short, the retractor protects the root for the whole middle of the case.
Pairing it with other retractors
Some surgeons prefer a longer reach, while others want a different blade angle. So many trays hold two or three root retractor patterns. Compare this one with the Love and Scoville designs if you are building a set.
Caring for your Holsher nerve root retractor
Rinse the blade quickly after use, because blood dries fast on a smooth surface. Also, brush the junction between the blade and the shaft. Once it is bone dry, send it through sterilization.

Placing an order
Workmanship defects on this retractor fall under our three-year warranty. Our Atlanta staff also give it a careful hand inspection prior to shipping. The FAQ answers questions about orders and tracking. For stainless steel quality, we work to ASTM F899, which governs steel for surgical tools. A shorter option is the Love nerve root retractor. You can compare further options in our neurosurgery section.
