Description
Hohmann Bone Lever
The Hohmann bone lever is one of the most familiar retractors in orthopedic surgery. Its pointed tip hooks around bone, and the blade levers soft tissue out of the way.
A design that endures
Georg Hohmann gave the name to this simple lever. Furthermore, the curved tip grips the far side of the bone. Then the shaft pivots on the near edge, so a light pull creates a wide view.
Seven widths
Blades come 8, 18, 22, 24, 35, 43 or 70 mm wide. Besides, the narrow blades fit small bones and tight approaches. Meanwhile, the broad 43 and 70 mm blades hold back large muscle groups around the hip and knee.
Who uses the Hohmann bone lever
Hip and knee replacement teams use several at once. Likewise, trauma surgeons use them to expose fractures before plating. In addition, spine and shoulder surgeons find them handy.
Safe placement
Seat the tip directly on bone, not on soft tissue. Otherwise it may slip or press on nerves and vessels. Also, release tension from time to time during long cases.
Building a Hohmann set
Hip trays often hold three or four widths at once. For example, an 18 mm, a 24 mm and a 43 mm lever cover most steps. Meanwhile, the 8 mm lever handles small bones and the 70 mm blade holds back the largest muscle groups.
Hohmann bone lever widths
- 8, 18, 22 and 24 mm
- 35, 43 and 70 mm
- Pointed, curved tip for bone purchase
- Supplied non-sterile
Reprocessing levers
Clean under the curved tip, where tissue tends to lodge. Dry each lever fully and store the widths in order. Check the tip for bends that could make it slip.
Cover and inspection
Our team in Atlanta checks the Hohmann lever one at a time before dispatch. Your written warranty protecting each lever extends to three years against manufacturing defects as standard. Want a custom quantity? Message us and we will check. Surgeons often add the small-bone Mini-Hohmann. With a general query, see the FAQ section. Further options appear in our orthopedic range. Most units keep an extra lever for back-to-back cases. FDA records list ASTM F899 as the standard for medical-grade stainless steel.
