Description
Esmarch Plaster Of Paris Knife
The Esmarch plaster knife is a classic 18 cm hand knife for plaster of Paris. It cuts, trims and opens casts with direct control.
A famous name
Friedrich von Esmarch was a pioneer of first aid and military surgery. Several instruments still carry the Esmarch name. Also, this knife is one of them.
How the Esmarch plaster knife cuts
The strong blade cuts damp plaster cleanly. With more care, it also cuts set plaster. Short strokes work better than long ones.
Who uses the Esmarch plaster knife
Plaster room staff trim edges and cut windows with it. Also, emergency departments use it to split a tight cast. Additionally, orthopedic wards keep one at hand.
Splitting a tight cast
Swelling under a fresh cast can cause pain. In that case, staff may split the cast along its length. Then the cast can open slightly while still giving support.
Handling
Hold the knife with a firm grip and steady wrist. Then cut away from the patient and your own hand. Keep a shield or padding under the cut line.
Edge and handle
The blade needs a sharp edge to cut safely. Therefore check it after each use. Also, check that the handle stays firm.

Care
Clear plaster from the blade before it hardens. Wash and dry. Store with an edge guard.
Aftercare and support
If the plaster knife turns up with a build defect, you have three years against manufacturing defects. Before it ships, an inspector in Atlanta assesses each plaster knife by hand. We also check stock on request. To read about the steel in surgical tools, consult ASTM F899. A second plaster knife in stores avoids delays. Extra designs are in the orthopedic catalog.
