Description
Beeson Plaster Cast Instrument
The Beeson cast spreader is a 30 cm plaster cast instrument. It opens the cut edges of a cast so staff can remove or loosen it.
How a spreader works
The jaws slip into the cut line of the cast. Then squeezing the handles pushes the jaws apart. As a result, the cast opens along the cut.
Beeson cast spreader size
At 30 cm, the Beeson gives strong leverage. Therefore it suits thick leg casts and spica casts. Smaller casts may need less force.
Who uses the Beeson cast spreader
Cast technicians and orthopedic nurses use spreaders daily. Also, fracture clinic doctors use them when checking wounds. Emergency rooms keep one for urgent cast removal.
Loosening a tight cast
Swelling under a cast can cause pain and pressure. In that case, staff may split the cast and spread it a little. This often relieves pressure while the limb stays supported.
Technique
Insert the jaws gently into the cut, away from the skin. Then open them in small steps along the line. Check the padding as you go.
Pairing with a saw
A spreader follows a cast saw or knife. Consequently, most cast rooms keep both. Also, we list several plaster saws and knives as well.

Our support behind the cast spreader
The cast spreader carries a pledge lasting three years against manufacturing defects. Every cast spreader goes through a thorough check in Atlanta before dispatch. For the basics of surgical alloys, open ASTM F899. Similar patterns are in our orthopedic catalog. We also suggest an option for larger orders. A backup cast spreader on the shelf covers reprocessing gaps. The common questions page covers orders, shipping and returns. For a matching piece, check our Hennig spreader.
