Heaney Retractor

The Heaney retractor is a right-angle retractor for vaginal surgery. Its blade draws the vaginal wall back and opens up the operating field.

A right-angle blade

The blade meets the handle at a right angle. As a result, the assistant can pull straight back while the blade sits deep in the vagina. That geometry keeps the hand out of the surgeon’s line of sight.

Three blade sizes

We list three blades: 45 x 25 mm, 73 x 28 mm and 82 x 28 mm, given as length by width. The short blade suits a shallow vault. Meanwhile, the two longer blades reach further for deeper exposure.

Where it fits in a vaginal set

Surgeons often use this pattern during vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic floor repair. For example, one blade can lift the anterior wall while a weighted speculum holds the posterior wall down. Many teams keep two sizes on the tray.

Caring for your Heaney retractor

Rinse the blade as soon as surgery ends, before any blood can harden on it. Then scrub the inside of the bend with a soft nylon brush. Finally, dry it fully before sterilization and storage.
