Guyon Dilating Bougie

A 26 cm sound with the curve concentrated near the tip rather than run along the shaft. That shorter bend gives a different feel on the way in and suits a distal stricture, where a long curved instrument would be working its whole length to reach a short segment.

Sizing and sets

Charriere 10 through to 30. Sizes are stocked individually and as a complete set, which is the practical way to buy them since dilation proceeds through consecutive calibers. A second series in the same pattern extends the range.

Choosing among the bougies

Three patterns are stocked. Dittel is straight, Guyon carries a short distal curve, and Van Buren has the long double curve. If you are building a first set, most practices start with Van Buren for general male urethral work and add Guyon for distal strictures.

Care

Surface finish is the instrument. Check the full length before every use and take anything scratched or pitted out of service, because a bougie that has lost its polish drags. Clean lengthwise, dry completely, and store supported.
