Gruenwald Nasal Cutting Forceps

The Gruenwald nasal cutting forceps is a through-cutting forceps for the nose and ethmoid region. Surgeons use the Gruenwald nasal cutting forceps to remove tissue and thin bone with a clean, sharp bite.

Through-cutting in the ethmoid

The ethmoid sinuses contain many thin bony partitions. Because through-cutting jaws slice rather than pull, they remove those partitions without stripping nearby mucosa. That makes the pattern popular in sinus surgery.

Four sizes

You can choose 8 x 4 mm, 7 x 4 mm, 6 x 4 mm or 5 x 2 mm. The first three share a 4 mm width and differ in length. The 5 x 2 mm size, however, is much slimmer for tight spaces.

In practice

A surgeon might open the ethmoid cells with a larger size and then refine the edges with the 5 x 2 mm jaw. Meanwhile, polyp forceps and suction keep the field clear. Several sizes on one tray save time during a long case.

Choosing sizes

First, pick one of the 4 mm wide sizes as your main forceps. Next, add the slim 5 x 2 mm version for detail. When your volume is high, a full set avoids waiting on reprocessing.

Caring for through-cutting jaws

Keep the edges sharp by avoiding contact with other metal during cleaning. So rinse the jaws soon after use and brush them gently. Dry the forceps fully, then sterilize it in a tray that holds it still.
