Description
Green-Armytage Placenta and Ovum Forceps
Green-Armytage forceps grasp the edges of the uterine incision at cesarean section. They help the surgeon control bleeding from the cut margins.
At cesarean section
Once the baby and placenta arrive, the uterine incision edges can bleed briskly. So the surgeon places these clamps along the margins. Then the edges stay visible and under control while the surgeon sutures.
Controlling bleeding
A firm grip on the cut edges slows ooze from the vessels there. Also, clearly defined edges help the surgeon plan the closure. Meanwhile, an assistant can hold them to present the wound.
About 22 cm
The length reaches the uterus through a lower abdominal incision. Therefore, the hands stay clear of the operative field. In addition, several pairs sit neatly side by side on one standard cesarean tray.
How many to stock
Surgeons typically place several pairs of Green-Armytage forceps around the incision. So a cesarean tray should hold enough for both edges. However, the exact number depends on local preference and the length of the incision.
Looking after Green-Armytage forceps
Rinse blood from the jaws as soon as the case ends. Next, clean the jaws and the hinge with a soft brush and enzyme solution. Then dry each pair and check that the tips close evenly.
