Description
Willett Placenta and Ovum Forceps
Willett forceps are a compact obstetric pattern of about 18 cm. The pattern goes by two descriptions: placenta and ovum, and scalp traction.
Two descriptions
As a placenta and ovum instrument, this pattern grasps tissue within the lower uterus. However, the scalp traction name refers to gripping the fetal scalp, a largely historical technique. So you will find it under both terms.
Compact size
At about 18 cm, it ranks among the shorter obstetric patterns. Therefore, it handles easily in a confined field. Also, it takes little room on the tray.
Who uses it
Obstetric units may keep it for tissue removal. Meanwhile, teaching collections value it as an example of scalp traction instruments. In addition, it can round out a complete obstetric set.
Size comparison
Willett forceps run shorter than the Green-Armytage pattern at about 22 cm. By contrast, Saenger and Lewkowitz patterns reach 25 cm or more. So let the depth of the working field decide between these patterns.
Reprocessing Willett forceps
Wash the jaws with a soft brush right after use. Next, rinse in clean water and dry the whole instrument at once. Finally, store it in a dry cabinet with the tips protected.
