The graefe iris hook is a fine 12cm hook for work on the iris. Also, it comes with a blunt or a sharp edge. The Graefe name is a mark of classic eye surgery, and this hook keeps that tradition in a simple, slim form.

Iris hook versus the Graefe muscle hook

We also stock a Graefe muscle hook for strabismus work. However, that one is larger and made for lifting a whole muscle. By contrast, this iris hook is small and fine. It works inside the eye at the iris and pupil margin. So the two share a name but do very different jobs, and you should not swap one for the other.

Edge choice: blunt or sharp

Choose blunt for gentle pushing and guiding. As a result, it lowers the risk of a tear. But choose sharp when you need a firm catch at one point. However, use the sharp version with care near the lens. Many surgeons stock both and decide on the day. Then the choice is made at the table, with the eye in front of them.
