Description
Gouge
This small orthopedic gouge has a curved, hollow blade for scooping bone. Its short build keeps the edge close to the fingers, which helps on small bones.
What a small orthopedic gouge does
Unlike a flat blade, the curved section lifts bone in a rolled strip. So it carves channels and clears cavities. It also takes cancellous graft without crushing it.
Widths on offer
We list it at 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mm. Small widths open a narrow canal. On the other hand, the larger sizes clear a broad hollow faster.
Picking a small orthopedic gouge
Choose the width that matches the hollow you plan to cut. If in doubt, start small and step up. Many teams also keep the matching chisel and osteotome nearby.
Step-by-step scooping
Begin with a narrow width to open the space. Then move up a size or two to round it out. Because each pass takes a thin curl, you keep control of depth throughout.
Small orthopedic gouge widths
- 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 mm
- Hollow blade for scooping
- Short, easy-to-steer design
- Non-sterile on arrival
Cleaning the hollow
Bone paste packs into the curve, so brush it out soon after use. Then rinse, dry and inspect the edge. Store it with the edge protected.
The promise on the gouge
We warrant this gouge for three years against manufacturing defects with every order. An Atlanta colleague reviews every gouge by hand prior to packing. View our complete orthopedic surgical instruments for the rest of the set. Our FAQ list clears up delivery and returns. The alloy in surgical tools has a reference standard, ASTM F899. Want a second opinion on sizing? Send us a note before you order. A second gouge in the sterile store saves a cancelled case. You may also want the small orthopedic osteotome.
