Description
Wolff Plaster Cast Instrument
The Wolff cast breaker is a plaster cast instrument for bending back the cut edges of a cast. You can order it at 18 cm or 23 cm.
What a Wolff cast breaker does
After a cast is cut, its edges can still hold firm. So a breaker grips an edge and bends it outward. As a result, the cast opens wider and lifts off more easily.
Two lengths
The shorter 18 cm model is handy on arm and pediatric casts. Meanwhile, the 23 cm size gives more leverage on leg casts. Many cast rooms keep both.
Who uses the Wolff cast breaker
Cast technicians and orthopedic nurses use it during removals. Also, fracture clinics use it when making a window in a cast. Emergency rooms keep one for quick access.
Technique
Grip the cut edge firmly with the jaws. Then bend it outward in small steps. Keep the jaws away from the skin and padding.
Windows in a cast
Sometimes staff need to see a wound under the cast. In that case, they cut a window and bend the edges back. Moreover, a breaker makes that job neat.
Pairing with a spreader
A spreader opens the cut, while a breaker bends the edges. Consequently, the two tools work well together. In addition, we list both.
