Ferris-Smith-Kerrison Intervertebral Disc Rongeur

The Ferris-Smith-Kerrison disc rongeur is a Kerrison-style punch for spinal surgery. Surgeons slip its footplate under the edge of the lamina and bite bone or ligament away in small pieces.

A Kerrison-style bite

In general, Kerrison rongeurs cut against a footplate that sits beneath the bone. As a result, the surgeon can remove bone right next to the dura while the footplate protects it. This pattern suits laminectomy, foraminotomy and disc work.

A wide choice of options

We list four shaft lengths: 18, 28, 30 and 33 cm. Bites then run from 1 to 6 mm. You can also choose an upward or downward cut, at 90 or 40 degrees. Together, these axes give ninety combinations.

Angle and direction

A 90-degree bite works straight across the bone edge. In contrast, the 40-degree version angles forward and reaches under an overhang. Meanwhile, upward and downward cuts let the surgeon work above or below the entry point.

Building a set

Most spinal surgeons keep several sizes on hand. For example, a 2 mm and a 4 mm upward bite cover much of routine lumbar work. The longer shafts help in larger patients or deeper approaches.
