Description
Ferris-Smith-Kerrison Intervertebral Disc Rongeur, Bayonet-Shaped
The bayonet Ferris-Smith-Kerrison rongeur is a Kerrison-style punch with a bayonet shaft. The offset moves the surgeon’s hand away from the visual axis, which helps under a microscope.
Why a bayonet shape
Microsurgical spine work needs a clear view down a narrow corridor. However, a straight instrument can block that view. The bayonet offset moves the hand to one side, so the surgeon sees the footplate at work.
Lengths, bites and angles
We offer lengths of 15, 18 and 20 cm. Bites range from 1.5 to 5 mm. You can choose a 40-degree or 90-degree bite, and then an upcurved or left angled version. In total, we list sixty combinations.
Upcurved or left angled
An upcurved rongeur bites upward, under the lamina above the working point. In contrast, a left angled rongeur turns toward one side. So surgeons pick the version that matches the anatomy they need to reach.
Choosing your rongeurs
First, choose a length that suits your microscope setup and patient size. Next, select two or three bite sizes. Finally, add the angles you use most, because a small set often covers routine cases.
Caring for your bayonet rongeur
Flush bone and tissue from the cutting end right after the case. Then brush the shaft channels and the footplate. Dry the rongeur completely, and apply instrument lubricant to the moving parts before sterilization.
