The Gerzog mallet is a compact, 18 cm hammer for fine bone work. It gives light, accurate taps on small chisels and gouges.

Compact and balanced

The short handle keeps the head close to the hand. So the surgeon can place each tap exactly. In addition, the light build reduces the chance of an overly hard blow.

Typical uses

ENT surgeons use patterns like this in nasal and ear work. Also, oral and hand surgeons find it handy with small osteotomes. It suits any task where thin bone must give way slowly.

Is the Gerzog mallet right for you?

Choose it if most of your blades are under 10 mm wide. However, if you also drive broad osteotomes, keep a heavier mallet nearby. Many trays hold one light and one heavy.

Working rhythm

Start with gentle taps to seat the blade. Then keep a steady rhythm rather than a few hard strikes. Because the mallet is light, small changes in force are easy to make.

Fitting it into a set

Because the Gerzog is light, it pairs well with fine osteotomes and gouges. However, it is not the tool for heavy impaction. Therefore most surgeons keep a second, heavier mallet on the same tray.

Upkeep

Clean the faces and handle after each case. Next, rinse and dry the mallet completely. Inspect the head for play before sterilizing.
