Description
Frykholm Bone Rongeur Forceps
The Frykholm bone rongeur is a bone-cutting forceps for spine and cranial surgery. Surgeons use it to bite away bone in controlled pieces, so they can shape an opening or free a nerve.
Bone removal by hand
In general, rongeurs remove bone one bite at a time. As a result, the surgeon keeps close control over how much bone comes away. The Frykholm pattern adds a long reach for work deeper in the wound.
Size
We list the rongeur at 23 cm. However, some catalogs give about 24 cm for the same pattern. If you need jaw dimensions, please contact us before ordering and we will confirm them.
Where it fits in spinal surgery
During a laminectomy or foraminotomy, the surgeon removes bone to relieve pressure. For example, a larger rongeur clears the bulk, and then finer tools trim the edges. This pattern helps with the heavier middle stage.
Building your rongeur set
Most spine trays hold several rongeurs of different sizes. So pair the Frykholm with a fine Kerrison and a smaller bone rongeur. That mix covers bulk removal and delicate trimming.
Caring for your Frykholm rongeur
First, clear bone chips from the open Frykholm jaws once the case ends. Then scrub the jaws and hinge with a nylon brush. Finally, dry the rongeur and lubricate the joint before sterilizing.
