The Echlin bone rongeur is a narrow rongeur for spinal surgery. It nibbles away lamina and small pieces of bone, so the surgeon can open the canal or a foramen.

A slim rongeur for spinal work

Laminectomy leaves little room around the dura. Therefore, the surgeon needs a rongeur with a small, controlled bite. The Echlin pattern takes bone in small pieces instead of large chunks.

Three bite sizes

We offer three bites: 2 mm, 3 mm and 4 mm. All three share a 23 cm length. The 2 mm bite suits careful work near neural tissue, while the 4 mm bite removes bone faster.

Its place in a laminectomy

The operation begins with exposure of the lamina. Next, a larger rongeur or punch removes the bulk of the bone. Then the Echlin bone rongeur trims the edges and clears smaller pieces near the dura.

Choosing a bite

Think about how close to the dura you usually work. For instance, many surgeons keep a 2 mm and a 4 mm on the tray. That pair covers fine trimming as well as quicker bone removal.

Caring for your Echlin rongeur

Flush bone chips out of the opened Echlin jaws after each case. Then scrub the jaws and the hinge area with a nylon brush. Dry the rongeur thoroughly, and lubricate the joint with an instrument lubricant before sterilization.
