French Pattern Lacrimal Dilator
The French pattern lacrimal dilator is a slim tool for opening the punctum. You may also see it spelled lachrymal. Clinicians use it to stretch the tiny opening of the tear duct so a probe or cannula can pass.
Why dilate first
The punctum is small and often tight. If you push a probe straight in, it may catch or tear the edge. A dilator widens it gently first. As a result, the next step goes in with less force.
Using the pattern
Pull the lid slightly outward so the punctum turns toward you. Then insert the tip for a short way, keeping it vertical. After that, tilt it toward the nose and turn it slowly as you go.
What to keep in mind
- Use light pressure at all times
- Keep the patient’s head still
- Work under good light or a loupe
- Stop if you meet firm resistance
Where it fits in a lacrimal set
Most tear duct sets hold at least one dilator, a range of probes and an irrigation cannula. This dilator opens the way. Then the probes or cannula do the rest.
Caring for the tip
Clean the tip soon after the case. Also look at the point under magnification, because a blunt or bent tip makes dilation harder. Store it apart from heavy tools. A tip guard or a padded slot works well, and it keeps the point sharp for the next patient.
The French dilator ships non-sterile. Each French tip handles many cycles of cleaning and sterilization. Stainless steel meeting ASTM F899 forms the tip and handle. We back this French pattern for three years against manufacturing defects; French dilator claims need no extra paperwork.
