Description
Ferris-Smith Tissue Forceps
Ferris-Smith forceps are a heavy tissue pattern with a broad, strong tip. They measure 18 cm.
A broad tip
The wide tip spreads the grip across tough tissue. So the forceps hold fascia and thick skin firmly.
1:2 or 2:3 teeth
The 1:2 version gives a clean, secure bite. Meanwhile, the 2:3 version spreads the hold over more teeth.
A sturdy build
The arms resist flexing under load. Therefore the tips stay aligned on dense tissue.
Where they help
Plastic and general surgeons use Ferris-Smith forceps for heavy layers. Then a finer Adson pair handles the skin edge. Also, the 18 cm length reaches most wound depths. In addition, Ferris-Smith forceps suit breast and abdominal closures, where layers are thick. Meanwhile, the 2:3 version spreads the grip for softer tissue. So one pair of each covers most heavy tissue work. Also, the Ferris-Smith forceps help when closing fascia after abdominal surgery, because the wide tip lifts the layer evenly. For example, a general theatre might keep one 1:2 pair on each laparotomy tray.
Care of Ferris-Smith forceps
Scrub between the Ferris-Smith teeth before tissue hardens. Afterwards, rinse the forceps thoroughly and pat them dry. Finally, close the tips and make sure the teeth still line up.
