Doyen Probe

The Doyen probe is a straight surgical probe, 15 cm long, with a flat plate at the handle end. It is a simple tool for exploring: you pass the Doyen probe gently along a wound, a sinus or a tract to find its depth and direction.

What it tells you

A probe gives feedback that imaging cannot always give at the bedside. For example, it shows whether a tract turns, stops short, or meets bone. In addition, the flat plate at the handle lets you hold the probe lightly, so you feel resistance early.

Choosing a Doyen probe

Choose it when you want a plain, straight probe of moderate length. If you need a guide for a blade, a grooved director such as the Kocher or Brodie suits better. On the other hand, the Myrtle Leaf probe adds a flat blade for spreading tissue.

Care

Rinse the probe after use, then wash and dry it. Before sterilizing, check that the shaft is still straight, because a bent probe gives false feedback.
