Description
Culler Cyclodialysis Spatula
The Culler cyclodialysis spatula is a flat, smooth blade for fine work in the anterior chamber. There is a single Culler pattern, with no sizes to pick. Many surgeons add it to a set of spatulas, so they always have the right shape at hand.
Building a spatula set
No single spatula suits every case. So many trays hold two or three, each with a different width or angle. The Culler can then fill one of those slots, next to a fine blade and a wider one.
How the Culler is held
Most surgeons hold it like a pen, with the blade flat to the tissue. Then they move from the fingers while the wrist rests. This grip gives fine control and helps avoid sudden moves.
Culler blade roles
Typical roles:
- Sweeping the angle
- Freeing light synechiae
- Guiding tissue back from a wound
Culler in glaucoma history
Like its siblings, the Culler takes its family name from cyclodialysis, an old glaucoma operation. Today, however, most users reach for it in cataract and iris work instead.
Spotting wear on a spatula
Over time, a spatula can pick up nicks or a slight bend. So look along the blade under good light before each case. If the edge feels rough, retire it from use rather than risk tissue damage.
