Cottle Osteotome

The Cottle osteotome belongs to the classic group of nasal instruments from Maurice Cottle. Surgeons tap it with a mallet during rhinoplasty and septal procedures to divide bone cleanly.

Six widths from narrow to broad

We offer 4, 6, 7, 9, 12 and 16 mm blades. The narrow sizes handle lateral cuts and fine work. Meanwhile, the 12 and 16 mm blades handle bigger dorsal work.

How osteotomes cut

Because an osteotome bevels on both faces, it tends to follow a straight course through bone. So the surgeon can guide it with steady mallet taps. That behaviour differs from a chisel, which tends to lift a slice.

Its role in rhinoplasty

After a hump comes down, the nasal bones may need repositioning. Therefore the surgeon makes lateral and sometimes medial cuts. Narrow blades usually handle these, while wider ones help with the hump itself.

If you are building a set, one narrow, one medium and one broad blade make a practical start. Later, you can add the in-between sizes. Email us your current widths and we will suggest gaps.

Caring for your Cottle osteotome

Clean each blade soon after the case. Next, dry it fully so no moisture sits along the edge. Then sterilize and store it with a cover over the tip.
