Cord Packers
A crisp margin on an impression often depends on cord that sits evenly in the sulcus. A retraction cord packer is the small hand instrument that tucks that cord into place. Its thin working end pushes the cord down around the tooth without catching or fraying it. This page offers two packers, each taken from an instrument set in our supplier’s catalogue.
CSI 1 and 113
The catalogue lists the first packer as Cord Packer CSI1 and the second as Cord Packer 113. We sell them as CSI 1 and 113. No further description appears beside either name. Therefore, compare the two photos to judge the working ends, or match the label to a packer you already use. Many offices keep both, since cord work often needs more than one angle.
Packing Cord Step by Step
- Cut a length of cord slightly longer than the margin.
- Start at an interproximal area and press it into the sulcus.
- Then work around the tooth with short, overlapping steps.
Angle the packer slightly toward the tooth so the cord goes down rather than out. Also, let the cord sit for the time your protocol requires before you remove it.
Thin Tissue, Gentle Pressure
Gingival tissue bruises easily. So light, steady pressure works better than force. If the cord keeps lifting, a second instrument can hold the placed section while the packer moves on. Because the working end is small, a good light and magnification help.
Both packers are examined in the United States for an even, burr-free working end before dispatch from Atlanta. Neither one ships sterile; clean off any surface film and sterilize the packer before you seat the first cord. In addition, CSI 1 and 113 alike come with three years against manufacturing defects in the working end or handle.
The packer steel conforms to ASTM F899. To handle cord and cotton, add our cotton pliers, 15 cm, see the full diagnostic, periodontal and restorative selection, or check our FAQ page.
Cord packers are for dentists and assistants trained in tissue management. Our fine instrument sterilizing notes and delivery page are available before purchase.
