Description
Cobb Periosteal Raspatories
The Cobb periosteal raspatory is a long instrument for clearing muscle and periosteum off the spine. Spine surgeons rely on it to expose laminae and spinous processes.
Made for spinal exposure
The blade has a broad, gently curved edge. Therefore it sweeps muscle away from bone in wide strokes. Furthermore, the long shaft keeps the hand above a deep wound.
Four widths
You can order 10, 13, 19 or 25 mm. Besides, the 10 mm size suits the cervical spine and narrow spaces. On the other hand, the 25 mm size clears the lumbar spine quickly.
How the Cobb periosteal raspatory is used
First, the surgeon places the blade against the spinous process. Next, it sweeps outward along the lamina, lifting muscle as it goes. Then gauze packing controls any bleeding.
Building a set
Many spine trays carry two widths, often 13 and 19 mm. However, cervical teams may prefer the 10 mm blade. Add the 25 mm version for larger lumbar exposures.
Protecting the canal
Keep the blade on bone and away from the interlaminar space. Otherwise the edge could slip toward the dura. Therefore work in controlled sweeps and check your landmarks often.

Reprocessing
Remove muscle and blood from the blade promptly. Then wash and dry the full length of the shaft. Inspect the edge for nicks before the next case.
Buying your raspatory
Before it ships, an inspector in Atlanta goes over the Cobb pattern piece by piece. Should the Cobb raspatory show an assembly issue, the buyer has three years against manufacturing defects. For the basics of surgical alloys, visit ASTM F899. Our order FAQ handles orders, shipping and returns. For a sister pattern, browse our Cobb elevator. One extra raspatory in stores covers reprocessing gaps. Similar tools are in our orthopedic range. Need help choosing a raspatory? Email our team and we will check.
Sold to medical professionals. Pictures on this page are for reference, and the steel holds nickel; check our sterilization page for the full note. Transit times live on the delivery page.
