Description
Claus-Eicken Ligature Needle
The Claus-Eicken ligature needle passes ligatures in deep, narrow spaces. Its slim shaft leaves room beside other instruments, which matters in the throat and other tight fields.
A slim profile
Slim instruments take up little room in a narrow opening. Consequently, the surgeon can keep a retractor and suction in place while passing the needle.
Length of the Claus-Eicken ligature needle
At 23 cm, the needle reaches deep into the throat or abdomen. Meanwhile, the handle stays clear of the line of sight.
Typical use
ENT surgeons use slim ligature needles in the tonsil bed and pharynx. In addition, general surgeons use them for deep vessels.
Threading
The eye sits close to the tip. Therefore, thread it once the tip shows on the far side of the vessel, then draw back smoothly.
A family of needles
The plain Claus pattern shares the same idea with a slightly different curve. In addition, many ENT trays keep both.
Claus-Eicken ligature needle beside a gag
With a mouth gag in place, the opening is crowded. Because the shaft is so slim, the needle slides past the tongue blade and the suction tip without pushing either aside.
