Description
Claus Ligature Needle
The Claus ligature needle passes ligatures around vessels in deep fields. Its curve and 23 cm length suit both the throat and the abdomen.
A versatile curve
The bend is moderate, neither tight nor wide. Therefore, it suits a broad range of vessels. That makes it a useful all-round needle.
Length of the Claus ligature needle
Twenty-three centimetres reaches deep in the throat or abdomen. In addition, the handle sits comfortably in the palm.
Typical uses
ENT surgeons use it in the tonsil bed. Meanwhile, general surgeons use it for deep abdominal vessels.
Technique
Sweep the moderate curve under the vessel in one arc. When the eye is visible, load it and reverse the movement.
Claus or Claus-Eicken
The Claus-Eicken has a slimmer shaft for very tight spaces. By contrast, the Claus is slightly sturdier. Moreover, many trays carry both.
Claus ligature needle as an all-rounder
If a tray can hold only one ligature needle, a moderate curve is usually the safest choice. In practice, the Claus handles throat vessels and abdominal branches equally well.
