Description
Castroviejo Needle Holder, 13 to 18 cm
This Castroviejo spring needle holder is built for fine suturing. A light spring opens the jaws, and a gentle squeeze closes them on the needle. So the surgeon can hold and rotate it with the fingertips, much like a pen.
How the spring handle works
The two flat handles meet at the tip and part at the back. Pressing them shuts the jaws. Easing off lets the spring part them once more. As a result, small turns of the fingers drive the needle with very little hand movement.
The five versions we stock
- 13 cm with straight jaws
- Straight jaws at 14 cm
- Curved jaws, also 14 cm
- A strong straight model at 14 cm
- Long 18 cm with straight jaws
Straight, curved or strong
Straight jaws give a clear line from hand to needle. Curved jaws, by contrast, keep the hand out of the view under a microscope. The strong model has a heavier jaw, so it suits larger needles that could twist in a fine tip.
Picking a length
The 13 and 14 cm sizes suit work close to the eye, for instance on the cornea or conjunctiva. However, the 18 cm size gives more reach in a deeper field. A typical Castroviejo spring needle holder setup is a 14 cm straight and a 14 cm curved on the same tray.
Looking after the jaws
Delicate tips lose grip when they clamp heavy needles. So match the needle to the jaw, and use the strong model for bigger sizes. After use, rinse the jaws, brush them gently, and dry the spring well.
Each one leaves us non-sterile, ready to reuse once it has been cleaned and sterilized. Its alloy satisfies ASTM F899 for surgical stainless. All five versions are backed by three years against manufacturing defects. For more lock and jaw choices, compare the Castroviejo needle holder range.
