Castroviejo-Barraquer Cyclodialysis Spatula
The Castroviejo-Barraquer cyclodialysis spatula lets you build the exact blade you want. Choose a 0.5 mm or 1.0 mm width, then a length from 8 mm to 18 mm. That gives twelve combinations for fine work inside the eye.
Width: 0.5 mm or 1.0 mm
The 0.5 mm width is light and slips through small ports. The 1.0 mm width, by contrast, has more body for firm sweeps. If you are unsure, start with 1.0 mm for general use and add 0.5 mm for delicate cases.
Length: from 8 mm up to 18 mm
Lengths run 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 mm. Shorter blades feel stiff and precise. Longer blades reach farther across the chamber, but they flex a little more. So match the length to how far the target sits from your port.
Common width and length pairings
Some starting points:
- 0.5 x 8 mm for close, fine sweeps
- 1.0 x 12 mm as an all-round blade
- 1.0 x 18 mm when you need long reach
Why so many sizes?
Eyes differ, and so do cases. A shallow chamber or a small port calls for a short, fine blade. A wide sweep across the chamber, however, needs more reach. This range lets one pattern cover both.
Keeping a mixed set in order
With so many sizes, a clear system helps. Mark width and length on your tray map, and store each blade in its own slot. After cleaning, check each tip for bends, since thin long blades flex most.
Ordering a Castroviejo-Barraquer blade
Each of the twelve width and length pairs ships unsterile. Clean and sterilize the blade you pick, and that Castroviejo-Barraquer size can come back for repeat cases. Barraquer-pattern steel meets ASTM F899 for surgical stainless. Every width and length has the same warranty: three years against manufacturing defects.
