Description
Castroviejo Cyclodialysis Spatula
The Castroviejo cyclodialysis spatula has a flat blade 1.2 mm wide and 10 mm long. It slips into narrow spaces inside the eye to sweep, separate or reposition tissue. The blade is thin and smooth, so it moves tissue without cutting.
Blade size: 1.2 x 10 mm
A width of 1.2 mm gives the blade enough body to push tissue aside. A 10 mm length also keeps the reach short and stable. As a result, these sizes suit work near the angle and the iris root.
From cyclodialysis to modern sweeps
The name comes from cyclodialysis, an older glaucoma operation. Back then, the surgeon passed a spatula to separate the ciliary body from the sclera. Today, many surgeons use the same blade to sweep the angle, free the iris or clear strands.
Castroviejo blade at a glance
Quick points:
- Flat, thin blade with smooth edges
- 1.2 mm width for firm sweeping
- 10 mm length for short reach
Handling it near the angle
First, enter through a small side port, then keep the blade flat. Move it slowly, and watch for any bleeding. If tissue resists, stop and change the angle rather than force it.
A short blade for stiff control
Short blades flex less than long ones. So the 10 mm length gives a firm, direct feel, which many surgeons like for steady sweeps. If you need more reach, our longer spatulas may suit better.
Ordering the 1.2 mm spatula
Castroviejo blades ship unsterile, so clean and autoclave the 1.2 mm spatula before its first case; afterwards it returns to the glaucoma or cataract tray for repeat use. Castroviejo steel also meets ASTM F899 for stainless. In addition, this Castroviejo blade has our warranty: three years against manufacturing defects.
