Caspar Specula

Caspar specula are narrow retractor blades for exposure during lumbar microdiscectomy. They hold tissue back and create a small, deep corridor to the disc.

Narrow, deep exposure

Microdiscectomy works through a small incision. Therefore, the blades need to be narrow but long enough to reach the lamina. The Caspar pattern keeps muscle back while leaving a clear line of sight for the microscope.

Blade sizes

We sell 18 mm wide Caspar specula in lengths of 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 75 and 85 mm. In addition, we list blades of 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65 mm without a stated width. That gives thirteen options. Contact us if you need the width of the second group.

Choosing a length

Blade length should match the depth from skin to lamina. So, a slim patient usually needs a short blade, while a larger patient needs a longer one. Many hospitals keep several lengths so they can adjust during surgery.

Ordering a practical set

First, check which retractor frame you use with these specula. Next, pick three or four lengths that cover most of your patients. For example, a set of 50, 60 and 75 mm covers a wide range.

Caring for your Caspar specula

Rinse the blades straight after surgery, then brush both faces and the mounting end. Also check the edges for damage. Dry them well before sterilization.
