Description
Brunner Retractor
The Brunner retractor gives deep abdominal exposure with a long, fairly narrow blade. It measures 25 cm and comes in nine blade sizes.
Blade range
Blades run from 80 x 20 mm up to 180 x 30 mm. So short blades hold the upper layers, and long ones reach the base of the cavity. Also, the range covers both slim and large patients.
Deep hold
Long blades keep bowel and other organs out of the way. Then the surgeon works in a clear, deep field with good light. As a result, exposure stays steady during careful dissection.
One length
Every blade size shares the same 25 cm body. However, the longer blades add more leverage against the assistant’s hand. Therefore assistants should keep a firm, even grip throughout.
Stocking
Teams often hold three Brunner retractor sizes in the main tray: short, middle and long. Meanwhile, the less common sizes can live in a backup set. That way the main tray stays compact.
Reprocessing Brunner retractor
Clean the blade right to the tip, where soil tends to collect. Next, rinse the whole instrument and check that the blade still runs straight. Finally, dry it and store the long blades flat so they keep their line.
