Doyen-Stille Retractor

The Doyen-Stille retractor holds back the abdominal wall with a broad blade. It comes in nine sizes on two instrument lengths.

24 cm sizes

Blades of 90 x 15, 90 x 20 and 90 x 30 mm sit on a 24 cm body. So do 110 x 35, 110 x 40 and 120 x 55 mm. Also, these cover most routine openings.

25 cm sizes

The 90 x 28, 105 x 30 and 120 x 52 mm blades come on a 25 cm body. Then the extra length helps in deeper wounds. As a result, you get more reach for larger patients.

Width choice

Narrow blades fit tight spaces near the edge of the wound. By contrast, the 52 and 55 mm widths hold more of the wall. Therefore choose by incision size.

Building a pair

Teams often use two Doyen-Stille retractor blades at once, one on each side. Meanwhile, a third size can hold the lower wound edge. That way exposure stays even.

Reprocessing Doyen-Stille retractor

Rinse the wide blade face first, then the handle. Next, scrub any residue at the blade base. Finally, dry it and store sizes by length.
