Description
Bowman Eye Speculum
The bowman eye speculum gives you a held-open fissure in a 7cm frame. Two blades sit under the lids, and the frame keeps them apart. As a result, the cornea and limbus stay in view while you work.
Bowman: a name from early eye surgery
Sir William Bowman gave his name to several eye tools, from probes to knives. This speculum carries that name in a simple lid-holding form. In practice, it suits routine front-of-eye work where you want a light, compact frame.
Sizing up the 7cm Bowman
At 7cm, it sits between the tiny wire specula and the larger adult frames. So it suits smaller adults and older children well. For a big adult eye, though, you may want more spread. In that case, an 8cm pattern is the better choice.
Checks before each Bowman case
- Look for straight blades with smooth edges.
- Squeeze the frame to confirm it springs back.
- Confirm the cycle indicator on the pouch.
- Have a second size on the tray in case of a poor fit.
Cleaning the Bowman frame
Rinse it soon after use. Then wash it manually or in an ultrasonic bath, and rinse with clean water. Dry it fully, because trapped water can spot the steel. It arrives non-sterile, so give it a full cycle before first use. After that, reuse it as often as you need.
