The Boies nasal elevator is a straight, flat instrument that many clinicians call the butter knife. ENT surgeons slide it into the nose to lift displaced nasal bones or to move the inferior turbinate.

What the butter knife shape does

The broad, blunt blade spreads force over a wide area. Because of that, the surgeon can push against bone without cutting the lining of the nose. The nickname comes simply from the look of the blade.

Common uses in the nose

Surgeons often use this pattern for closed reduction of a broken nose. For instance, they place the blade under the depressed bone and lift it back into line. It also helps with outfracture of the turbinates when the airway needs more room.

Size and shape

Where it fits with other nasal tools

Many trays hold the Boies next to a nasal speculum and a septum elevator. Then the speculum opens the vestibule while the butter knife does the lifting. A Killian speculum works well for that pairing.

Caring for the elevator

Wipe the blade after the procedure, then rinse off any blood and mucus. Next, scrub both faces with a soft brush and dry the instrument fully. Finally, sterilize it and store it flat so the edges stay clean.
