Description
Billroth Retractor
The Billroth retractor is a hand-held abdominal tool with a 25 cm body. It comes in three blade sizes for different wound depths and patient builds.
Blade sizes
Choose 35 x 40, 43 x 35 or 45 x 50 mm. So a thin wall takes the smaller blade, while a thicker one needs more. Also, the largest blade suits a bigger opening.
Length
At 25 cm, it reaches into the abdomen with room left for the hand. Then the assistant can pull without leaning over the field. Because of that, the operating view stays open.
Abdominal work
Teams use it to hold the wall and deeper layers apart during open cases. However, it needs a steady hand from start to finish. Therefore it pairs well with a self-retaining frame for long cases.
Stocking the tray
Many general trays hold one Billroth retractor in two sizes. Instead of carrying all three, pick the ones your cases need most. That way the tray stays light and quick to set up.
Reprocessing Billroth retractor
Wash the blade face and the edges with a soft brush after each case. Then rinse under running water and check the blade for bends. Finally, dry it and place it in the tray with the blade protected.
