Description
Bethune Bone and Rib Shear
The Bethune rib shear cuts through ribs and bone during chest surgery. At 33 to 34 cm long, it gives leverage and reach.
Cutting ribs
Some thoracic approaches require removing or dividing a rib. So surgeons use a shear to cut through the bone in a controlled way. Also, a long shear gives leverage for thick ribs.
Length and leverage
At 33 and 34 cm, this counts as a long instrument. Because of that, it multiplies the force from the surgeon’s grip. Therefore, it cuts through rib with less effort than shorter tools.
Two sizes
The 33 cm and 34 cm versions feel very similar. However, the extra centimeter can add leverage for larger patients. Pick by hand size, preference and the build of your usual patients.
Planning your thoracic tray
Many thoracic sets carry a Bethune rib shear alongside rib spreaders and contractors. For example, the surgeon may cut a rib, then spread the chest. Finally, a rib contractor helps bring the ribs together at the end.
Reprocessing Bethune rib shear
Clean bone fragments from the cutting edges right after use. Next, check the edges for chips or dulling under good light. Protect the blades in storage, and send the shear for sharpening when it starts to tear rather than cut.
