The Bensaude anoscope is a tubular instrument for examining the anal canal. Both sizes measure 70 mm long, and you choose between two diameters.

19 mm or 22 mm

The 19 mm tube suits patients who find a wider tube uncomfortable. On the other hand, the 22 mm tube gives a broader view and more room for instruments.

Typical uses

Clinicians use this pattern for inspection, banding and injection of hemorrhoids. Because the tube is 70 mm long, it reaches just beyond the anal canal.

Examination technique

Lubricate the tube well and ask the patient to take a slow breath as you insert it. Then remove any obturator and bring a light source to the opening. Next, withdraw the tube gradually while you inspect each quadrant. For banding or injection, hold the tube steady with one hand so the target does not slip out of view. Afterwards, note which diameter the patient tolerated, since that guides the next visit. In addition, a short explanation before insertion helps many patients relax, which makes the examination quicker.

Clean the lumen with a soft brush after each use. Then rinse, dry and check the rim for dents before sterilization.
