Description
Beacham Instrument For The Amnion Bladder
The Beacham amnion hook lets a clinician rupture the membranes during labor. It measures about 25 cm and ends in a hooked tip.
Beacham amnion hook: artificial rupture of membranes
Artificial rupture of membranes, often shortened to ARM, forms a routine part of labor care. Clinicians choose it to augment labor or to see the color of the fluid. So the ward needs an instrument that reaches the cervix with ease.
Length for reach
About 25 cm of length lets the tip reach the forewaters past the examining fingers. Meanwhile, the operator’s hand stays comfortably outside. That way, both view and control remain good.
The working tip
The tip snags the membrane as the operator draws it back. Then the membrane opens and amniotic fluid begins to drain around the fetal head. Also, the fingers guide the tip away from the fetal scalp.
Beacham or Iowa
Our Iowa pattern has a curved shaft. By contrast, the Beacham amnion hook gives a second pattern for clinicians with their own preference. So many labor wards stock both side by side.
Reprocessing Beacham amnion hook
Handle the tip with care during transport so it keeps its shape. Next, run a soft brush over it and rinse under warm water. Then dry the instrument and lay it in a tray where nothing presses on the working end.
