Description
Iowa Instrument for the Amnion Bladder
The Iowa amniotomy hook is a curved instrument with a small hook tip. Obstetricians and midwives use it to rupture the amniotic membranes during labor.
Iowa amniotomy hook: what amniotomy does
Amniotomy means opening the membranes to release the fluid. Clinicians may do it to start or speed labor, or to allow internal monitoring. So a dependable instrument matters on any labor ward.
The curved shaft
The curve follows the path from the vagina to the cervix. Therefore, the tip reaches the membranes while the hand stays low. Also, the operator can guide it along the fingers already at the cervix.
A small tip
A small hook at the end catches the membrane and tears it. Meanwhile, the operator’s fingers shield the surrounding tissue. Then fluid drains in a controlled way.
A reusable choice
Many units use plastic single-use devices for this task. By contrast, this Iowa amniotomy hook goes back through cleaning and sterilization. In addition, its length of about 25 cm keeps the hand outside the vagina.
Cleaning Iowa amniotomy hook
Hold the instrument by the shaft when cleaning, since the tip can snag gloves and cloths. Next, clean the tip with a small brush and check that it has no burrs. Finally, fit a tip protector if you have one, and store it separately.
