Description
Barraquer Fixation Forceps
The Barraquer fixation forceps steadies the eye so you can cut or suture with control. It takes hold of conjunctiva or the limbus area and keeps the globe from turning. At 10 cm, it gives a comfortable reach over the speculum.
Why fixation matters
Even a small eye movement can spoil a clean incision. So many surgeons fix the globe before they enter the eye. A fixation forceps does this with a small, firm grip, while the other hand does the fine work.
Handling the Barraquer at 10 cm
Hold it lightly near the middle of the handle. Then place the tips just outside the area you plan to cut. Because the length is moderate, you can brace your hand on the patient’s forehead and still see the field.
Counter-traction in practice
Fixation also gives counter-traction. For example, when a blade meets the cornea, the forceps pushes back gently. As a result, the blade passes cleanly instead of pushing the eye away.
- 10 cm overall length
- Fixes the globe for incisions
- Gives counter-traction for the blade
- Suits corneal and cataract steps
Barraquer or a finer pattern?
This version suits general fixation. However, if you want a very fine 0.12 mm bite near a wound, the Barraquer Colibri pattern may serve better. Many trays carry both, since each one has its own role.
Wash and check the Barraquer tips
Rinse the tips soon after the case, because dried blood is hard to clear. Next, brush them gently and dry the forceps. Finally, close it under a light and confirm the tips meet evenly.
Barraquer forceps, delivery and cover
It leaves us non-sterile, so sterilize it on arrival; after that the Barraquer serves case after case. Your Barraquer stays protected for three years against manufacturing defects. In addition, Barraquer tips use stainless steel that meets ASTM F899. If you want a shorter body, try the 9 cm Barraquer-Llovera.
