Description
Balfour Retractor
The Balfour retractor is a self-retaining frame that holds a midline laparotomy open. It comes in three frame sizes, and each can carry a center blade.
Frame sizes
Sizes read as depth x width x spread in mm. The 70 x 35 x 180 mm frame suits smaller openings. Meanwhile, the 100 x 35 frames open to 200 or 250 mm.
With a center blade
The 180 mm frame comes plain or with a 45 x 80 mm center blade. Next, the 200 mm frame ships with a 100 x 60 mm blade. Also, the 250 mm frame pairs with a 70 x 85 mm blade.
Center blades alone
You can order the 45 x 80 or 70 x 85 mm center blade by itself. So a lost blade does not mean buying a new frame. Plus, it lets you add a blade to a plain frame.
Choosing a spread
A 250 mm Balfour retractor opens the widest field for large patients. However, a 180 mm frame handles more easily in a smaller abdomen. Therefore, match spread to the incision you usually make.
Care of Balfour retractor
Take the center blade off before washing so both parts come clean. Then brush the side arms and every frame joint, where fluid tends to sit. Finally, dry the frame completely and put it away closed.
