Description
Bailey-Baby Rib Contractor
The Bailey-Baby rib contractor brings ribs together at the close of pediatric chest surgery. It comes in 14 cm and 15 cm to suit smaller patients.
Scaled for children
A child’s chest calls for a smaller instrument than an adult tray provides. So this contractor keeps a compact frame. Also, it takes up less room in a small incision.
How surgeons use it
The surgeon hooks the claws around the ribs on either side of the incision. Then they close the gap gently and hold it while sutures go in. Finally, they remove the instrument before closing the soft tissue.
14 cm or 15 cm
The 14 cm size fits the smallest patients. Meanwhile, the 15 cm size gives a touch more reach for older children. Plus, having both lets the team match the instrument to each patient’s size.
For pediatric sets
Pediatric thoracic trays usually need their own rib instruments. Therefore, keep a Bailey-Baby rib contractor with your smaller rib spreaders. In addition, store it apart from adult contractors so staff pick the right one.
Reprocessing Bailey-Baby rib contractor
Clean the small claws carefully with a soft brush. Next, check that the instrument opens and closes smoothly. Store it in the pediatric set, not loose among adult tools where it could go missing.
